A Diverging Scotland and Westminster

The 2015 General Election resulted in the SNP winning 56 out of a total of 59 Scottish seats.   However, this is not enough to deter new laws being passed in Westminster and it seems we cannot rely on the other “socialist” party, Labour, who either vote with the Government or do not vote at all.    Nicola Sturgeon summed it up succinctly when she stated:

“Almost all of Scotland’s democratically elected representativesNicola Yes in your Hands at Westminster voted against airstrikes, but they are going ahead anyway.     That is the simple reality of the constitutional arrangement we currently have.”       Nicola Sturgeon.

What Does Scotland Want?

Here are some examples:

RENEWABLE ENERGY – YES
and we are doing well at it – see our 2015 performance

What is Westminster doing?

  • cutting grants to renewable projects therefore threatening the development of this industry and achieving our climate change targets. – read latest
  • investing in nuclear energy.
  • pushing ahead with coal gas exploration (including fracking under their national parks.  read more.)
    Despite:
    a.   strong environment and health and safety concerns.
    b.   the lack of a robust legislative framework.
    c.   planning application refusals and community objections.

In the Scottish Parliament on 28 January 2015, Nicola Sturgeon said the following:
“We continue to spend significant sums on climate change mitigation, with budgets totalling more than £900 million over two years supporting progress towards our world-leading targets.  Of course, it is a widely recognised fact tht the UK Government is hampering the renewable energy sector and putting at risk millions of pounds of investment in the Scottish and UK economies.”

FULL FISCAL AUTONOMY – YES
What is Westminster doing?
Promoting a Scotland Bill which does not meet the promises made in The Vow and the Smith Commission.

FAIR SOCIAL SERVICES – YES
What is Westminster Doing?
Continuing with an austerity policy which is detrimental to the most vulnerable in our society.

From the announcement by David Cameron on the day after the referendum promising EVEL, to the diluted Smith Commission proposals and the out of hand rejection of every amendment to the Scotland Bill proposed by our SNP MSPs, Westminster is showing a total disregard to what the Scottish people want.  How much longer can Scotland continue to try to work with a Government who is taking us down a road upon which we do not wish to travel?    56 out of 59 seats is great but it is not enough to influence the outcomes we need to make the changes we want.   It is obvious we need to be in charge of our own affairs.

When will there be another independence referendum?

The SNP.org website states:  “The SNP manifesto for the 2016 election will set out our position on a second independence referendum and consider in what circumstances such a referendum might be appropriate at some point in the future”.
December 2015.
